EMDR tackles symptoms and distress by resolving associated disturbing memories. EMDR incorporates a rhythmic left-right stimulation by eye-movements (or other means such as tapping), which is considered to accelerate resolution.
Whilst EMDR was initially developed for PTSD, it has a growing evidence-base for other problems such as depression and some anxiety disorders. EMDR is a structured, intensive, experiential therapy, typically lasting between 6-12 sessions. For long-standing difficulties and complex trauma, more sessions are usually required.
Cognitive behavioural therapy has an extensive evidence-base for resolving many mental health difficulties. CBT is a structured and directive approach, which targets problematic patterns of cognition (thoughts/memories) and behaviour that maintain symptoms and distress.
CBT is a time-limited approach, typically lasting between 12-16 sessions. For long-standing difficulties and complex trauma, more sessions are usually required,
CBT is a broad family of interventions, originally comprised of behavioural therapy and cognitive therapy. Third wave approaches to CBT have emerged with an emphasis on cognitive processes, rather than the content of thoughts, and often include additional elements of mindfulness, values, and compassion.
I can offer 3rd wave modalities of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT; MBL), Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) and Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT).
Schema Therapy (ST) originally emerged from Cognitive Therapy, advancing treatment for complex, recurrent and personality difficulties. ST views that recurrent problems are fuelled by underlying 'schemas' – emotional frameworks comprised of memories and beliefs, the remains of unmet childhood needs.
In treatment, ST includes cognitive and behavioural techniques, but also emphasises experiential methods such as imagery, memory processing, and chairwork. ST also uses the therapist-client relationship as a central part of treatment. ST is a long-term therapy for interpersonal and long-standing difficulties, with at least 30 sessions.
As an integrative approach, ST can be complemented by EMDR for early memory work and aspects of 3rd wave approaches such as mindfulness and compassion.
I am a BABCP Accredited CBT Supervisor, and trainer for CBT supervisors. I can offer support with BABCP Accreditation and CTS-R evaluation. I am trained to provide EMDR supervision as a Consultant in Training.
